Engage your students in studying Earth's tectonic plates!

In 1915, German researcher, Alfred Wegener, surmised that continents of Earth had moved over geologic time relative to one another. Decades later, in 1968, American geophysicist, Jack Oliver provided scientific evidence supporting this theory. The surface of Earth is divided into 15 different pieces called tectonic plates that move and bump into each other, creating mountains, valleys, trenches, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. For this assignment, students will choose a tectonic plate to study and create a project to showcase their learning. Have fun!

This resource guides students through conducting their own research report on a tectonic plate (43 topics are listed). After choosing a topic to focus on, students are asked to conduct research using the Internet and books while following criteria. Next, students are asked to share their learning by creating a poster board, presentation board, power point presentation, or dodecahedron (Instructions and Pentagon Template included). Artwork may also be created to further display learning. Finally, students present their work to the class.
