Help your students learn phonological awareness and improve their reading!
1) What are Elkonin Boxes?
Elkonin Boxes are an instructional method used to build students’ phonological awareness by segmenting words into individual sounds or phonemes. This method uses a series of boxes that are positioned below a picture of a vocabulary term.
2) How are Elkonin Boxes used?
For students at the pre-reading stage, Elkonin Boxes are used to teach them that words are made up of separate sounds. Students listen to a word spoken and then place a token into each box representing each sound. For example, the word dog has three sounds, “d – o – g” so the student would place three tokens. Eventually, students would write a letter or a blend inside each box to represent each sound.
3) Why use Elkonin Boxes?
The purpose of using Elkonin Boxies is to build students’ phonological awareness. Research has shown that phonological awareness is a reliable predictor of later reading ability. Elkonin Boxes are primarily used in early elementary education and with students with reading difficulties.
