According to most archaeologists, approximately 30,000 years ago, the first people arrived to what is now known as Canada. They travelled from Asia, possibly over a land bridge from modern day Russia to Alaska. After their arrival, a vast variety of peoples, societies, and cultures flourished for millennia. With over 630 recognized groups within Canada, and over 60 distinct languages spoken today, the variety within the First Peoples population is truly remarkable. For this assignment, students choose a First Nations group to study and create a project to showcase their learning. Have fun!

This resource guides students through the process of conducting their own research report on a first nations group. First, students choose a group to focus on and learn how to properly conduct research. After researching, students choose how to showcase their learning by creating a poster board, presentation board, PowerPoint, or dodecahedron. Afterwards, students present their learning to the class and self-assess their achievement.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts.
